Having beaten Congo 3–1 and the holders Morocco 3–0 in the group, Uganda met Nigeria in Kumasi. Abbey Nasur and Phillip Omondi scored in a 2–1 win that sent the Cranes to their only AFCON final, lost 2–0 to Ghana in Accra.

Uganda’s AFCON legacy
Uganda were at the Africa Cup of Nations almost from the start. They reached the four-team finals of 1962 in Addis Ababa, losing a semi-final to Egypt, and played five tournaments between 1962 and 1978. The best of them was Ghana 1978: the Cranes beat Congo, swept aside the holders Morocco 3–0, beat Nigeria 2–1 in the semi-final in Kumasi — Phillip Omondi scoring for the third time in the tournament — and lost the final 2–0 to the hosts in Accra.
Then came a 39-year absence. Uganda returned at Gabon 2017 as the best runners-up in qualifying, level on points with their group winners Burkina Faso, and Farouk Miya’s goal against Mali was their first at a finals since 1978. Two years later in Egypt, Patrick Kaddu and Emmanuel Okwi beat DR Congo 2–0 for the Cranes’ first finals win in 41 years, before a Sadio Mané goal for Senegal ended their run in the last 16.
Then came a 39-year absence. Paul Put, the Belgian who took Burkina Faso to the 2013 final, brought Uganda back again for Morocco 2025. They went out in the group stage with one point, from a 1–1 draw with Tanzania in the first meeting of the two neighbours at a finals.
The next tournament comes to them. In September 2023 CAF named Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania joint hosts of AFCON 2027, the first edition staged by three countries, and Uganda’s place is already secured. In qualifying Group H against Tunisia, Libya and Botswana only the best-placed of the other three goes through; the Cranes open away to Tunisia on 24 September 2026 and host Libya on the 29th.

Group D · Oyem
Uganda lost their first two games in Gabon by a single goal, to Ghana and Egypt. Against Mali in Oyem, Farouk Miya scored their first finals goal since 1978; Mali equalised three minutes later.
2019
Group A · Cairo
Patrick Kaddu scored after 14 minutes and Emmanuel Okwi added a second early in the second half as Uganda beat DR Congo 2–0, their first finals win since 1978. They drew with Zimbabwe next and went on to reach the last 16.
2025
Group C · Rabat
In the first meeting of Uganda and Tanzania at a finals, Simon Msuva’s penalty put Tanzania ahead and Uche Ikpeazu headed Uganda level ten minutes from time. Allan Okello missed a stoppage-time penalty that would have won it.

In qualifying for 2017, Uganda and Burkina Faso finished level on 13 points with identical 6–2 goal records. Burkina Faso won the group on head-to-head; Uganda went through as the best runners-up.
