After 120 goalless minutes against Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana led the shoot-out 2–0 when the Ivorians failed with their first two kicks. It went to 22 penalties: Ghana goalkeeper Razak Braimah failed with the 21st and his opposite number, Boubacar Barry, scored the 22nd to make it 9–8.

Ghana’s AFCON legacy
Ghana set the early pace of African football. The Black Stars won the Cup at their first attempt, as hosts in 1963, kept it in Tunis two years later and reached the next two finals as well. In 1978, again at home, they became the first country to win three titles, and when a 7–6 shoot-out against hosts Libya settled the 1982 final in Tripoli, Charles Kumi Gyamfi had coached three of those four triumphs — still a shared record.
Nine finals in all — only Egypt have played more — but the last three have gone the other way. Côte d’Ivoire won the 1992 final 11–10 on penalties, Egypt won the 2010 final 1–0, and in 2015 Ghana led the shoot-out against Côte d’Ivoire 2–0, only for their goalkeeper Razak Braimah to fail with the 21st kick and his opposite number, Boubacar Barry, to score the 22nd. André Ayew played through eight tournaments of that era, from 2008 to 2023 — a joint record.

The last cycle was the hardest in decades. Ghana went out in the group stage in 2021 and 2023, then finished bottom of their qualifying group for Morocco 2025 without a win. Carlos Queiroz, appointed in April 2026, led them at the World Cup that summer: a stoppage-time win over Panama and a draw with England, then defeats by Croatia and, in the round of 32, Colombia.
Queiroz was reappointed in September for the road to East Africa, and it starts in the hardest place available: Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on 24 September 2026. Group C also includes The Gambia, who visit Accra on 29 September, and Somalia. The top two qualify for the finals.

In their first tournament, as hosts, Ghana drew with Tunisia and beat Ethiopia to top their group, then beat Sudan 3–0 in the final in Accra. Edward Aggrey-Fynn opened the scoring from the penalty spot.
1965
Final · Tunisia 1965, Tunis
Ghana defended the title away from home, beating hosts Tunisia 3–2 in the final with an extra-time goal from Kofi Pare. Osei Kofi was named the tournament’s best player.
1982
Final · Libya 1982, Tripoli
George Alhassan put Ghana ahead against the hosts before Libya equalised to force extra time. The Black Stars won the first shoot-out in the history of the final 7–6 to become four-time champions.

AFCON rivalry
The neighbours have met ten times at the finals. Ghana won five of them, including the 1968 and 1970 semi-finals after extra time; Côte d’Ivoire won three. The other two were finals — 0–0 in 1992 and 2015 — and Côte d’Ivoire won both shoot-outs, 11–10 and 9–8. The rivalry resumes in Bouaké on 24 September 2026, on the opening night of qualifying.
