The hosts opened their own tournament with Flávio’s first-half double and penalties from Gilberto and Manucho for a 4–0 lead over Mali. Seydou Keita began Mali’s reply in the 79th minute and the visitors levelled at 4–4 deep in stoppage time. Angola still went on to reach the quarter-finals.

Angola’s AFCON legacy
Angola’s Africa Cup of Nations story has been written in quarter-finals. The Palancas Negras reached their first finals in 1996, went out in the group stage at each of their first three tournaments, and only in 2008 made the last eight for the first time, where Egypt beat them 2–1.
Two years later Angola hosted the continent. The opening night at the Estádio 11 de Novembro in Luanda is still one of the tournament’s most retold: Flávio scored twice, Gilberto and Manucho added penalties, and the hosts led Mali 4–0 until the 79th minute – then Mali scored four, the last five minutes into stoppage time. Angola regrouped to reach the quarter-finals, where Ghana won 1–0.
Two years later Angola hosted the continent. Côte d’Ivoire 2023 was the breakthrough in all but the final step. Angola arrived with four wins from 26 finals matches, won their group unbeaten ahead of Burkina Faso, Mauritania and Algeria, and then beat Namibia 3–0 with ten men in Bouaké – their first knockout win and their biggest victory at the finals. Nigeria ended the run 1–0 in the quarter-final.
Morocco 2025 brought two draws and a group-stage exit, and in April 2026 the federation turned to Aliou Cissé, who led Senegal to their first title in 2021. His road to East Africa runs through Group B with Egypt, Malawi and South Sudan, starting in Cairo on 25 September; the top two qualify, and no one is through yet.

Group D · Côte d’Ivoire 2023
A 1–1 draw with Algeria was followed by a 3–2 win over Mauritania and a 2–0 win over Burkina Faso. Angola topped the group with seven points, Algeria finished bottom, and for the first time the Palancas Negras had won two matches at a single AFCON.
2024
Round of 16 · Bouaké
Angola’s third knockout match at the finals was the first they won. Gelson Dala scored twice before half-time and Mabululu added a third against Namibia, even after goalkeeper Neblu was sent off. The 3–0 margin is Angola’s biggest AFCON win.
