Benin’s AFCON legacy
Benin’s Africa Cup of Nations story is one of patience. Their first tournament, Tunisia 2004, brought three defeats and a single goal — Moussa Latoundji’s, in the 90th minute against Nigeria. Ghana 2008 and Angola 2010 passed without a win too, and across their first four finals the record read 14 matches, five draws and no victories.
Yet the best of those tournaments came without a win at all. At Egypt 2019, Michel Dussuyer’s side drew with Ghana, Guinea-Bissau and Cameroon, then held Morocco 1–1 in Cairo through Moïse Adiléhou’s goal and won the shoot-out 4–1. A 1–0 defeat to Senegal ended the run in the quarter-finals, still Benin’s best finish.
Yet the best of those tournaments came without a win at all. At Egypt 2019, Michel Dussuyer’s side drew with Ghana, Guinea-Bissau and Cameroon, then held Morocco 1–1 in Cairo through Moïse Adiléhou’s goal and won the shoot-out 4–1. A 1–0 defeat to Senegal ended the run in the quarter-finals, still Benin’s best finish.
The wait ended at Morocco 2025. After losing their opener to DR Congo, Gernot Rohr’s team beat Botswana 1–0 in Rabat, Yohan Roche finishing a pass from captain Steve Mounié — Benin’s first win at a finals, in their 16th match, almost 22 years after their debut. Three points were enough for a place among the best third-placed teams, and Jodel Dossou’s late equaliser took Egypt to extra time in the round of 16 before the Pharaohs won 3–1.
Rohr is still in charge for the road to East Africa. Benin are in Group F with Burkina Faso, Mauritania and the Central African Republic; the campaign opens in Burkina Faso on 25 September 2026, and the top two in the group qualify for the finals.

Benin arrived in the knockout rounds with three draws from three. Moïse Adiléhou put them ahead against Morocco, Youssef En-Nesyri equalised, and Benin won the shoot-out 4–1 to reach the quarter-finals for the first time.
2025
Group stage · Rabat (Morocco 2025)
Yohan Roche scored in the 28th minute from Steve Mounié’s pass and Benin held on to beat Botswana 1–0. It was their first victory at a finals tournament.
2026
Round of 16 · Agadir (Morocco 2025)
A goal down to Egypt, Benin levelled through Jodel Dossou seven minutes from the end of normal time. Egypt scored twice in extra time to win 3–1.
