Botswana’s AFCON legacy
Botswana’s first AFCON was earned the hard way. In qualifying for the 2012 finals the Zebras topped a five-team group with 17 points, beating Tunisia 1–0 home and away. At the tournament in Gabon they met Ghana, Guinea and Mali, and Diphetogo Selolwane’s penalty against Guinea and Mogakolodi Ngele’s strike against Mali — which briefly put Botswana ahead — were the country’s first goals on the continent’s biggest stage.
The wait for a second finals lasted twelve years. Under Morena Ramoreboli, first as interim coach and then appointed permanently, Botswana finished second to Egypt in their Morocco 2025 qualifying group, beating Cape Verde twice and taking the decisive point with a 1–1 draw in Cairo on the final matchday.

Morocco 2025 was a hard education with one unforgettable night. Senegal put 17 shots on target in Tangier and goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko saved 14 of them — the most by a goalkeeper in any AFCON match in CAF’s records — before Senegal won 3–0. Defeats by Benin and DR Congo followed, and Botswana are still waiting for a first point at the finals.
The road to 2027 begins after an upheaval: Ramoreboli left on 8 September 2026 to join South Africa’s coaching staff. Botswana are in Group H with Tunisia, Libya and co-hosts Uganda, who have qualified automatically — so only the best-placed of the other three reaches the finals. Qualifying begins on 24 September 2026 away to Libya, with Tunisia visiting on 28 September.

Group D · Gabon & Equatorial Guinea 2012, Libreville
After defeats by Ghana and Guinea — where Diphetogo Selolwane’s penalty had brought the country’s first finals goal — Mogakolodi Ngele gave Botswana a 1–0 lead over Mali early in the second half. Mali came back to win 2–1, but it remains the only time Botswana have led at the finals.

Botswana went into the final matchday against group winners Egypt and drew 1–1 in Cairo. It gave them second place on eight points, one ahead of Mauritania, and a return to the finals for the first time since 2012.
2025
Group D · Morocco 2025, Tangier
Senegal put 17 shots on target and Goitseone Phoko saved 14 of them, a record in CAF’s data for an AFCON match. Nicolas Jackson still scored twice and Cherif Ndiaye added a third for a 3–0 Senegal win.

Botswana and Libya, their first 2027 opponents, shared two 1–0 wins in AFCON 2023 qualifying: Libya’s in Benghazi in 2022, Botswana’s in Francistown in 2023 through Gape Mohutsiwa.
Francistown has been the Zebras’ recent home: all three home qualifiers for Morocco 2025 were played there, and the 2023 win over Libya came at the city’s Obed Itani Chilume Stadium.
