Central African Republic’s AFCON legacy
Central African Republic have never played at an Africa Cup of Nations finals. They begin the 2027 group stage as one of five nations still chasing a first appearance — and with a qualifying record that has troubled some of the biggest names on the continent.
In October 2010 Les Fauves beat Algeria 2–0 in Bangui and went on to finish second in their group for the 2012 finals, three points behind Morocco. Two years later they won 3–2 away to seven-time champions Egypt and drew the return 1–1 in Bangui, putting Egypt out. Only Burkina Faso stood between them and South Africa 2013: CAR won 1–0 at home, then lost 3–1 in Ouagadougou to a goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time, when two had been indicated. Burkina Faso went on to reach the final.

The near misses kept coming. CAR finished second with ten points in qualifying for 2017, beating group winners DR Congo 2–0 in Bangui. In March 2021 they needed a home win over Mauritania on the final day to overtake them for second place and lost 1–0. In June 2023 a win over Angola in their home tie, staged in Douala, would have sealed a first qualification; Angola won 2–1. Since 2021 the country has had no CAF-approved stadium of its own.
Group F for 2027 brings back two of those old obstacles, Burkina Faso and Mauritania, alongside Benin. The top two qualify. The campaign opens away to Mauritania on 24 September 2026 — a tie Mauritania are hosting in Casablanca — and continues at home to Burkina Faso four days later.

Central African Republic won 3–2 away to Egypt in June 2012 and drew the return 1–1 in Bangui a fortnight later, eliminating the continent’s most successful team from qualifying for South Africa 2013.

Qualifier, second round · Ouagadougou
A 1–0 home win over Burkina Faso left CAR one result from a first finals. In the return in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso won 3–1 with the decisive goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time, although only two had been indicated. The federation’s protest to CAF failed, and Burkina Faso went on to reach the 2013 final.

Central African Republic went into the last round of qualifying for Cameroon 2021 needing to beat Mauritania at home to overtake them for second place. Mauritania won 1–0 in Bangui and took the place at the finals instead.
Central African Republic are one of five nations in the 2027 qualifying group stage still chasing a first finals, along with Eritrea, Lesotho, Somalia and South Sudan.
In qualifying for 2012 they drew 0–0 with Morocco home and away and beat Algeria 2–0 in Bangui.
They finished second in their 2017 qualifying group with ten points, and beat the group winners, DR Congo, 2–0 in Bangui.
