Comoros’s AFCON legacy
Few national teams have covered so much ground so quickly. FIFA recognised Comoros in 2005; nine years later Amir Abdou took over a side that barely registered in the world ranking. In March 2021 a goalless draw with Togo in Moroni locked in second place behind Egypt and, with it, the islands’ first Africa Cup of Nations.
Cameroon 2021 opened with defeats by Gabon and Morocco, then turned in Garoua. El Fardou Ben Nabouhane scored Comoros’ first finals goal after four minutes against four-time champions Ghana, Ahmed Mogni added two more, and the 3–2 win carried the debutants into the round of 16. There, against the hosts in Yaoundé, a registered defender, Chaker Alhadhur, started in goal and Nadjim Abdou was sent off in the seventh minute. Comoros still scored through Youssouf M’Changama before losing 2–1.

Stefano Cusin’s team came back stronger on paper: unbeaten through qualifying for Morocco 2025 and top of a group that included Tunisia, beaten 1–0 in Tunis. The finals were tighter. After losing the opening match of the tournament to the hosts in Rabat, the Coelacanths held Zambia and Mali goalless but went home on two points.
Hubert Velud, appointed in March 2026, now leads the road to East Africa through Group G alongside Cameroon, Namibia and Congo. The campaign starts away to Cameroon on 24 September 2026, and the top two in the group qualify for the finals.

Group stage · Garoua (Cameroon 2021)
Pointless after two games, Comoros led Ghana inside four minutes through El Fardou Ben Nabouhane. Ahmed Mogni scored twice in the second half and the 3–2 win sent Comoros through as one of the best third-placed teams, while Ghana went out bottom of the group.
2022
Round of 16 · Yaoundé (Cameroon 2021)
Chaker Alhadhur, listed in the squad as a defender, started in goal against the hosts and Nadjim Abdou was sent off after seven minutes. Cameroon led 2–0 before Youssouf M’Changama pulled one back nine minutes from time.

Qualifier · Tunis
A 1–0 win away to Tunisia in October 2024 set up an unbeaten qualifying campaign: three wins, three draws and first place in the group, two points ahead of the Tunisians.
