Equatorial Guinea’s AFCON legacy
No country has arrived at the Africa Cup of Nations quite like Equatorial Guinea. Their first tournament was one they co-hosted with Gabon in 2012, and they won their opening match in Bata on the way to the quarter-finals. Three years later, having been disqualified from qualifying, they were hosts again after Morocco withdrew — and went all the way to the semi-finals before finishing fourth, still their best result.
The side that followed proved it could win away from home. Juan Micha took Equatorial Guinea to three tournaments in a row. At Cameroon 2021 they beat holders Algeria 1–0 and Mali on penalties to reach the quarter-finals; at Côte d’Ivoire 2023 they topped a group containing Nigeria, beat the hosts 4–0, and Emilio Nsue’s five goals won him the Golden Boot.

Morocco 2025 was harder: three defeats and an early exit. By the end of August 2026 Micha had left, Nsue — the national team’s record scorer and long-time captain — had retired, and the federation had appointed the Italian coach Vincenzo Alberto Annese.
Annese’s first campaign runs through Group E with DR Congo, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe, starting in Kinshasa on 24 September 2026. The top two in the group qualify for the finals.

2015
Quarter-final · Equatorial Guinea 2015
A goal down to Tunisia, Equatorial Guinea levelled through a Balboa penalty in stoppage time, and he scored again in extra time to win 2–1. The run ended with a semi-final defeat to Ghana and fourth place.
2022
Round of 16 · Limbe (Cameroon 2021)
After beating the holders Algeria in the group stage, Equatorial Guinea drew 0–0 with Mali and won the shoot-out 6–5 to reach the quarter-finals, where eventual champions Senegal beat them 3–1.
2024
Group stage · Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire 2023)
Emilio Nsue scored twice, Pablo Ganet and Jannick Buyla once each, and Equatorial Guinea beat Côte d’Ivoire 4–0 to finish top of Group A, ahead of Nigeria. Four days earlier Nsue had scored a hat-trick against Guinea-Bissau.

Equatorial Guinea were disqualified from qualifying for the 2015 tournament, then became its hosts when Morocco withdrew.
At Côte d’Ivoire 2023 they finished above both eventual finalists: they held Nigeria 1–1 and beat Côte d’Ivoire 4–0.
They reached the knockout rounds at each of their first four AFCONs — 2012, 2015, 2021 and 2023.
At Cameroon 2021 they beat the holders, Algeria, 1–0 in the group stage.
