Eritrea’s AFCON legacy
Eritrea entered AFCON qualifying for the first time in 1998 and made an early mark. In January 1999 they held Cameroon — African champions a year later — to a goalless draw at home, and that June they beat Mozambique 1–0 for their first win in the competition.
In qualifying for Ghana 2008 they finished second in their group on nine points, four behind Angola, with Kenya beaten home and away and Angola held 1–1 at home. Only the group winners and the three best runners-up went through. The last game of that run, a 0–0 draw in Swaziland in September 2007, was Eritrea’s last AFCON qualifier for more than 18 years.

The return came in March 2026 under Hesham Yakan, a former Zamalek defender who was part of Egypt’s squad at the 1990 World Cup. Without an international-standard venue at home, Eritrea hosted Eswatini in Meknes, Morocco, and won 2–0 with late goals from Sheffield United’s Siem Eyob-Abraha and Egypt-based striker Ali Suleiman. Suleiman scored twice more in a 2–1 win in Eswatini, and Eritrea were through 4–1 on aggregate.
Group D brings South Africa, Guinea and co-hosts Kenya. Kenya’s place at the finals is already secured, so only the best-placed of the other three will qualify. Qualifying begins on 24 September 2026; Eritrea open against Kenya on 26 September — the side they beat twice in that 2008 campaign — and play South Africa on 30 September.

AFCON qualifier · Eritrea v Kenya
Eritrea won 2–1 in Kenya in September 2006 and beat them 1–0 at home in June 2007 on the way to second place in their qualifying group for Ghana 2008. They are the last AFCON qualifiers the two sides have played — until Group D brings them together again.
2026
Preliminary round · Meknes and Eswatini
Eritrea’s first AFCON qualifier since 2007 was played in Meknes, Morocco. Siem Eyob-Abraha and Ali Suleiman scored late for a 2–0 win despite a missed penalty; in the return in Eswatini, Suleiman scored twice early in the second half and Eritrea won 2–1, 4–1 on aggregate.
Ali Suleiman scored three of Eritrea’s four goals against Eswatini in the March 2026 preliminary round.
The squad for the 2026 return combined 12 home-based players with 14 Eritreans playing in the UK, Egypt, Germany, Sweden and Australia.
Siem Eyob-Abraha, who scored Eritrea’s first goal of the 2026 return, came through Manchester United’s youth set-up.
Eritrea reached the final of the 2019 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup in Uganda, beating Kenya 4–1 in the semi-final before losing 3–0 to the hosts.
Inactivity had taken Eritrea out of FIFA’s world ranking before their 2026 return.
No. Eritrea have never reached the finals. Their 4–1 aggregate win over Eswatini in March 2026 put them into the group stage of qualifying.
In September 2007 — a 0–0 draw in Swaziland in qualifying for Ghana 2008. Eritrean football officials have never publicly explained the long absence.
