Days after beating Kenya in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau won the return in Nairobi 1–0, Sanchez Semedo scoring seven minutes from time. The result, in a game halted for half an hour by crowd trouble, took them top of Group E.

Guinea-Bissau’s AFCON legacy
Guinea-Bissau went from never having qualified to four finals in a row. When they first made it, in June 2016, they were a country of 1.7 million with no professional league and had never been inside FIFA’s top 100. Baciro Candé, a local coach back in the job for the closing qualifiers, oversaw a home-and-away double over Kenya that March and a 3–2 win over 2012 champions Zambia in Bissau; Kenya’s win over Congo the next day confirmed the place.
The debut in Gabon began with a point against the hosts, Juary equalising in stoppage time in Libreville. The Djurtus came back in 2019 — having topped their qualifying group — and again in 2021 and 2023, but twelve matches at the finals have brought three draws and nine defeats. A first win at the tournament is still the goal.

The run ended in qualifying for Morocco 2025, when a 2–1 home defeat by Mozambique on the final day left them third behind Mali and Mozambique. Emiliano Té, who succeeded Luís Boa Morte in 2025, has built his squad for this campaign entirely from players based abroad.
Group L is familiar ground. It includes Nigeria, whom Guinea-Bissau beat 1–0 in Nigeria on the road to Côte d’Ivoire 2023, plus Madagascar and co-hosts Tanzania. With Tanzania already qualified, only the best-placed of the other three goes through. The campaign opens away to Tanzania on 25 September 2026, with Nigeria the visitors four days later.

In front of a full national stadium, Guinea-Bissau beat Zambia 3–2 on 4 June 2016 to go four points clear with a game to play. Kenya beat Congo in Nairobi the following day, and the country’s first AFCON place was sealed.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put Gabon ahead early in the second half of Guinea-Bissau’s first match at the finals. In the first minute of stoppage time Juary equalised — the country’s first goal and first point at an AFCON.

AFCON rivalry
The two have shared a group at two finals — Nigeria won 2–0 in Garoua in 2022 and 1–0 in Abidjan in 2024 — but Guinea-Bissau took the qualifying meeting on the road to Côte d’Ivoire 2023, winning 1–0 in Nigeria through Mama Baldé, Nigeria’s only home defeat of that campaign. They meet again in Group L on 29 September 2026.

When Guinea-Bissau first qualified for AFCON in 2016, they had never been ranked inside FIFA’s top 100 and had no professional league.
Guinea-Bissau’s first two AFCON goals both came in 2017: Juary against hosts Gabon and Piqueti against eventual champions Cameroon.
They topped their qualifying group for the 2019 finals, finishing ahead of Namibia, Mozambique and Zambia.
Guinea-Bissau were drawn with Nigeria at both the 2021 and 2023 finals — and now share an AFCON 2027 qualifying group with them too.
Emiliano Té’s squad for the September 2026 qualifiers includes players from clubs such as Athletic Bilbao, Galatasaray, Fiorentina and Trabzonspor — and none from the domestic league.

Not yet. Through Côte d’Ivoire 2023 they have played 12 finals matches, with three draws and nine defeats.
