Liberia’s AFCON legacy
Liberia’s Africa Cup of Nations story belongs to one generation, and to one player above all. George Weah — the 1995 Ballon d’Or winner, the first African to receive it — did not just lead the Lone Star on the pitch: through the civil war years he financed the team, paid for travel and equipment, and for a spell coached it too. Both of Liberia’s finals appearances came in his era.
The debut came at South Africa 1996. Nigeria’s withdrawal left Liberia in a three-team group, and they beat Gabon 2–1 in Durban before losing 2–0 to Zaire in Johannesburg; all three sides finished on three points and Liberia went out on goal difference. Six years later in Mali, Weah put them ahead against the hosts and they led Algeria 2–1, only to concede an 87th-minute equaliser to Mali and a stoppage-time one to Algeria. A 1–0 defeat by Nigeria in Mopti, Weah’s final international, ended the campaign.

There has been no return since. In May 2026 the federation appointed Mohammed Adil Erradi, a Belgian-Moroccan coach who won three Rwandan league titles with APR FC and whose first competitive match in charge of Liberia is, fittingly, in Kigali.
Group K pairs the Lone Star with Mali, Cape Verde and Rwanda, and the top two qualify. The campaign opens away to Rwanda on 25 September 2026, with Mali the visitors four days later.

A 2–0 defeat by Zaire left all three teams in the Nigeria-less group on three points. Gabon and Zaire went through; Liberia, with a goal difference of minus one, went home.
2002
Group A · Bamako
George Weah gave Liberia the lead against hosts Mali on the stroke of half-time, and Mali equalised three minutes from the end. Against Algeria the Lone Star led 2–1 into stoppage time and drew again. Two points were not enough once Nigeria won the final group game 1–0 in Mopti.
