Libya’s AFCON legacy
Libya’s great AFCON fortnight came on home soil. Hosting the 1982 finals, the Mediterranean Knights went unbeaten through a Tripoli group with Ghana, Tunisia and Cameroon, then beat Zambia 2–1 in the semi-final with two goals from Ali Al-Beshari. He scored again in the final to cancel out George Alhassan’s opener for Ghana, and after extra time the title was decided on penalties for the first time in the competition’s history. Ghana won the shoot-out 7–6.
Fawzi Al-Issawi, who scored in the opening 2–2 draw with Ghana, was named the tournament’s best player — still the only Libyan to receive the award. Libya have reached the finals through qualifying only twice since: Egypt 2006, where a goalless draw with Morocco brought their only point, and Gabon and Equatorial Guinea 2012. That second campaign was unbeaten in qualifying, and at the finals Libya held Zambia, the eventual champions, 2–2 before Ihaab El-Boussefi’s two goals beat Senegal 2–1.

The years since have been harder. The 2013 finals, due to be staged in Libya, went to South Africa as emergency hosts because of the conflict in the country, and by early 2026 Libya had gone through seven qualifying campaigns without reaching the finals. Senegalese coach Youssouph Dabo arrived in Tripoli in September 2026 to lead the next attempt.
Libya are in Group H with Tunisia, Botswana and co-hosts Uganda. Uganda have qualified automatically as co-hosts, so only the best-placed of the other three teams reaches the finals. Qualifying begins on 24 September 2026, when Libya host Botswana; they visit Uganda on 29 September.

Ihaab El-Boussefi scored after five minutes and again six minutes from time as Libya beat Senegal 2–1 — their first win at the finals outside Libya. Four points left them third in Group A.
