Mozambique’s AFCON legacy
For almost four decades Mozambique’s Africa Cup of Nations record was a list of near things. The Mambas debuted at Egypt 1986, came back for South Africa 1996 and Burkina Faso 1998, returned again at Angola 2010, and left every time without a win.
Côte d’Ivoire 2023 showed how close they had come. Against Egypt they went from a goal down to 2–1 up through Witi and Clésio, and only a Mohamed Salah penalty deep in stoppage time took the lead away. Against Ghana they trailed 2–0 going into added time, then scored twice — a Geny Catamo penalty and a Reinildo Mandava finish — to draw 2–2.
Côte d’Ivoire 2023 showed how close they had come. Against Egypt they went from a goal down to 2–1 up through Witi and Clésio, and only a Mohamed Salah penalty deep in stoppage time took the lead away. Against Ghana they trailed 2–0 going into added time, then scored twice — a Geny Catamo penalty and a Reinildo Mandava finish — to draw 2–2.
The breakthrough came in Agadir on 28 December 2025. Faizal Bangal, Catamo from the spot and Diogo Calila scored against Gabon, and Chiquinho Conde’s team held on for a 3–2 win: Mozambique’s first victory at a finals, at the 17th attempt and 39 years after their debut. Three points carried the Mambas into the knockout stage for the first time, where Nigeria beat them 4–0 in Fez.
Conde, a Mambas striker of the 1980s and 90s, is still the coach, and the road to East Africa starts at home. Both opening qualifiers are at the Estádio Nacional do Zimpeto in Maputo — Senegal on 25 September 2026, in a fixture switched from Dakar at the Senegalese federation’s request, then Sudan — with Ethiopia completing Group J. The top two qualify.

Two Jordan Ayew penalties had Ghana 2–0 up. Geny Catamo converted a penalty in the first minute of stoppage time and Reinildo Mandava equalised three minutes later.
2025
Group stage · Agadir (Morocco 2025)
Faizal Bangal and Geny Catamo put Mozambique 2–0 up before half-time and Diogo Calila added a third after the break. Gabon pulled two back, but the Mambas held on for their first victory at a finals — three points that eventually carried them into the knockout rounds for the first time.

Former Mambas captain and the coach of the team that finally won at a finals.
In 1987 he became the first Mozambican footballer to join a foreign club officially, Belenenses of Portugal; as coach he took Mozambique to Côte d’Ivoire 2023 and Morocco 2025.
1990s–2010
A scorer through the 1990s qualifying campaigns and still leading the line in 2010.
Scored in qualifying for both 1996 and 1998, and started against Benin at Angola 2010.

Fourteen years between two AFCON campaigns.
Started against Benin at Angola 2010 and, aged 40 when qualifying began in September 2024, played five of the six qualifiers for Morocco 2025 and scored once.

The late equaliser against Ghana and an ever-present in the 2025 qualifiers.
Scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time for a 2–2 draw with Ghana in 2024, then played every minute of the six qualifiers for Morocco 2025.

Geny Catamo has scored three goals at AFCON finals — against Ghana in 2024 and twice at Morocco 2025 — more than any other Mozambique player.
Mozambique have twice qualified for back-to-back finals: 1996 and 1998, then 2023 and 2025. A third in a row, in 2027, would be a first.
Mozambique and Benin met at Angola 2010 and drew 2–2 in Benguela.
Both of Mozambique’s September 2026 qualifiers are in Maputo: Senegal’s federation asked to switch the opening match from Dakar, so Senegal host the return on matchday 5.
