Namibia’s first finals produced seven goals in three matches. Against Angola they went 2–0 and then 3–1 up before the game finished 3–3. The two neighbours would not meet again at the finals until the 2024 round of 16.

Namibia’s AFCON legacy
Namibia’s AFCON story is a lesson in patience. The Brave Warriors arrived at Burkina Faso 1998 and made noise straight away: seven goals in three games, a 4–3 defeat by Côte d’Ivoire and a 3–3 draw with Angola in which they had led 2–0 and then 3–1. Ghana 2008 brought a 1–1 draw with Guinea, with Brian Brendell scoring both of Namibia’s goals of the tournament, and Egypt 2019 three defeats, two of them by a single goal.
The wait ended in Korhogo in January 2024. Deon Hotto’s goal in the closing minutes beat Tunisia 1–0 — Namibia’s first win at the finals, at their tenth attempt, and their first clean sheet. A goalless draw with Mali in San Pédro then took Collin Benjamin’s side into the knockout rounds for the first time as one of the best third-placed teams, before Angola ended the run 3–0 in Bouaké.

A goalless draw with Mali in San Pédro then took Collin Benjamin’s side into the knockout rounds for the first time as one of the best third-placed teams, before Angola ended the run 3–0 in Bouaké.
Benjamin, who played in all three of Namibia’s matches at Ghana 2008, is still in charge. Namibia missed Morocco 2025 in a qualifying group that sent Cameroon and Zimbabwe through, and the squad he has named for this window mixes a foreign-based core — Peter Shalulile, Hotto, AmaZulu captain Riaan Hanamub — with players from the domestic league.
The road to East Africa runs through Group G with Cameroon, Comoros and Congo; the top two qualify, and qualifying begins on 24 September 2026. Because Namibia’s own stadiums do not currently meet the required standard, their ‘home’ opener against Congo that day is being staged in Francistown, Botswana. They then travel to Comoros on 29 September.

Tunisia, African champions in 2004, were beaten 1–0 by Deon Hotto’s goal in the closing minutes. It was Namibia’s first win and first clean sheet at the finals, and it came in their tenth match.

A 0–0 draw with Mali in San Pédro left Namibia third in Group E on four points, enough to go through as one of the best third-placed teams. Angola won the round-of-16 tie 3–0 in Bouaké, but Namibia had played knockout football at the finals for the first time.
