Three years after joining FIFA, South Sudan beat Equatorial Guinea 1–0 in Juba on 5 September 2015, in qualifying for AFCON 2017. It was the first victory in the national team’s history.

South Sudan’s AFCON legacy
South Sudan’s national team played its first full international only in July 2012 — a 2–2 draw with Uganda in Juba. The football federation, founded in 2011, joined CAF in February 2012 and was admitted as FIFA’s 209th member at the Budapest Congress on 25 May 2012. Two years later the Bright Stars entered AFCON qualifying for the first time: Eritrea withdrew from the preliminary tie, then Mozambique won 5–0 in Maputo before a goalless second leg staged in Khartoum.
The firsts have come steadily since. A 1–0 win over Equatorial Guinea in Juba in September 2015 was the first victory in the national team’s history. In November 2020, playing a ‘home’ qualifier in Nairobi, South Sudan beat Uganda 1–0 — a side that had reached the round of 16 at AFCON 2019. They have also beaten Congo twice in qualifying: 2–1 in Brazzaville in 2023, and 3–2 in Juba in November 2024.

What has not yet come is a place at the finals. South Sudan have now come through a preliminary round in five successive campaigns, most recently beating Djibouti 4–1 on aggregate in March 2026 with both legs in Juba — Keer Majak scored once and set up two in the 4–0 first leg. The group stage, so far, has been the ceiling.
A new coach, Christian N’Sengi-Biembe, takes the team into Group B alongside Egypt, Angola and Malawi, where the top two qualify for East Africa. The campaign opens away to Malawi on 25 September, followed by a home match against Egypt on 29 September.

Qualifier · Nairobi
Four days after losing 1–0 to Uganda in Entebbe, South Sudan turned the result around in their ‘home’ fixture in Nairobi on 16 November 2020, winning 1–0 with a first-half penalty from Tito Okello. Uganda had reached the round of 16 at AFCON 2019.
2024
Qualifier · Juba
In qualifying for Morocco 2025, South Sudan played their group home games in Juba. After narrow defeats there by South Africa (3–2) and Uganda (2–1), they beat Congo 3–2 on 14 November 2024 for their only win of the group.
2026
Preliminary round · Juba
Goals from Teng Kuol, Justin Bangasi, Peter Manyang and Keer Majak gave South Sudan a 4–0 first-leg win on 26 March 2026. Djibouti won the return 1–0, but the Bright Stars went through 4–1 on aggregate.
South Sudan became FIFA’s 209th member on 25 May 2012, three months after joining CAF — admitted under a newly changed rule that removed the two-year wait at confederation level.
The 2027 campaign is South Sudan’s seventh in AFCON qualifying; their first, for 2015, began with a walkover when Eritrea withdrew.
Both legs of the 2027 preliminary tie against Djibouti were played in Juba.
South Sudan beat Congo in both of the last two qualifying campaigns — 2–1 away in Brazzaville for 2023 and 3–2 at home in Juba for 2025.
Malawi, South Sudan’s first opponents in 2027 qualifying, beat them 1–0 home and away in the 2021 campaign.
