Sudan hosted the first Africa Cup of Nations, a three-team tournament with Egypt and Ethiopia. The hosts played the opening match against Egypt in Khartoum before a crowd of around 30,000 and lost 2–1; Egypt went on to beat Ethiopia in the final.

Sudan’s AFCON legacy
The Africa Cup of Nations began in Khartoum. Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia made up the whole field in February 1957, and the hosts lost their semi-final 2–1 to Egypt in front of some 30,000 people. Two years later in Cairo, Sudan were beaten 2–1 by Egypt again in the deciding match, the winner coming in the last minute; in 1963 they reached the final in Ghana and lost 3–0 to the hosts.
The title came at home in 1970. A 3–0 win over Ethiopia, a 1–0 defeat by Côte d’Ivoire and a 2–1 win over Cameroon took coach Abdel-Fattah Hamad Abu-Zeid’s side into the semi-finals, where El-Bashir scored twice to beat Egypt 2–1 after extra time. In the final in Khartoum, an early goal from Omar Ali Hasab El-Rasoul, known as ‘Hasabou’, beat Ghana 1–0.
The title came at home in 1970. A 3–0 win over Ethiopia, a 1–0 defeat by Côte d’Ivoire and a 2–1 win over Cameroon took coach Abdel-Fattah Hamad Abu-Zeid’s side into the semi-finals, where El-Bashir scored twice to beat Egypt 2–1 after extra time. In the final in Khartoum, an early goal from Omar Ali Hasab El-Rasoul, known as ‘Hasabou’, beat Ghana 1–0.
Then came a long wait. Sudan did not win another match at the finals for 42 years, until a 2–1 victory over Burkina Faso at Gabon and Equatorial Guinea 2012 carried them to the quarter-finals. Morocco 2025 told a different kind of story: Sudan qualified ahead of Ghana while playing every ‘home’ match abroad because of the war at home, beat Equatorial Guinea 1–0 for their first finals win since 2012, and went through to the last 16, where they led Senegal after six minutes in Tangier before losing 3–1.
James Kwesi Appiah, the Ghanaian who led his own country at the 2014 World Cup, remains in charge. Group J brings Senegal, Mozambique and Ethiopia, with the top two qualifying. Sudan’s nominal home match against Ethiopia on 25 September 2026 is being staged in Juba, South Sudan, before a trip to Maputo to face Mozambique four days later.

Two days after beating Egypt 2–1 after extra time in the semi-final, Sudan met Ghana in the final. Hasabou scored early and the lead held for a 1–0 win — Sudan’s first and so far only continental title.

After losing to Côte d’Ivoire and drawing 2–2 with Angola, Sudan beat Burkina Faso 2–1 to finish second in their group — their first win at the finals since the 1970 final. Zambia, the eventual champions, beat them 3–0 in the quarter-finals.

Sudan reached the knockout rounds for the first time since 2012 as one of the best third-placed teams, and took the lead against Senegal after six minutes through Aamir Abdallah’s curling shot. Pape Gueye scored twice before half-time and Senegal won 3–1.

Two of the three nations at the first AFCON, Sudan and Ethiopia have met twice at the finals, and Sudan won both: 1–0 in Cairo in 1959 and 3–0 in Khartoum on the way to the 1970 title. They open Group J against each other on 25 September 2026, in Juba.
