Getting around on your own

    Uber and Bolt both operate in Dar es Salaam, and are the simplest door-to-door option for a visitor.

  • Bajaji

    Three-wheelers for short hops. No meter — the fare is agreed first.

  • DART (Mwendokasi)

    The bus rapid transit system runs in its own dedicated lanes along the main corridors, so it is not held up by the traffic beside it.

  • The Zanzibar ferry

    Fast passenger ferries run between the Dar es Salaam terminal and Stone Town. The alternative is the short flight from the airport.

Useful travel information

The questions people actually ask before booking Dar es Salaam — including the ones where the honest answer is "not yet known".

  • Zanzibar is close enough to be a genuine add-on rather than a separate trip — by ferry from the city centre or by air from the airport.
  • Dar es Salaam is hot and humid all year. June and July are the drier, slightly cooler months.
  • Tanzania has its own mobile money services and cards are accepted in hotels, but small cash in Tanzanian shillings is worth carrying.

  • Tanzania is a confirmed joint host of AFCON 2027, but CAF has not yet published the host cities, the stadiums or the match schedule. Until it does, nobody can say which matches will be played in Dar es Salaam. We will say so here the day it is official, and we do not guess in the meantime.
