Algeria’s AFCON legacy
Algeria’s two titles arrived 29 years apart and look almost identical on paper. As hosts in 1990 they won all five of their matches, scored 13 and conceded two, and Cherif Oudjani’s goal beat Nigeria 1–0 in the final, with Rabah Madjer named the tournament’s best player. In Egypt in 2019 they went through seven matches unbeaten — six wins and a draw — with the same 13–2 goal record, and beat Senegal 1–0 in the Cairo final. Ismaël Bennacer was the best player that time.
The road to the first title was long and close. Algeria reached their first final in 1980 and lost it 3–0 to hosts Nigeria, then finished fourth in 1982 and third in both 1984 and 1988. After 1990 came quarter-finals and group exits, broken by a run to fourth place in 2010 that included a 3–2 extra-time quarter-final win over Côte d’Ivoire’s celebrated generation.

After 1990 came quarter-finals and group exits, broken by a run to fourth place in 2010 that included a 3–2 extra-time quarter-final win over Côte d’Ivoire’s celebrated generation.
The 2019 champions then went out of both the 2021 and 2023 tournaments in the group stage without a win. Morocco 2025 restored some pride: three group wins, three goals from Riyad Mahrez, a 119th-minute winner from substitute Adil Boulbina against DR Congo, and a quarter-final defeat to Nigeria in Marrakech.
Brahim Hemdani, appointed on 5 September 2026 after leading Algeria’s under-21s to Mediterranean Games gold, takes charge of the 2027 campaign in Group I against Zambia, Togo and Burundi, with the top two qualifying. Qualifying begins on 24 September 2026; Algeria host Zambia in Tizi-Ouzou the next day.

Algeria beat Côte d’Ivoire 3–2 after extra time to reach the semi-finals, ending the tournament hopes of an Ivorian generation that included Didier Drogba and the Touré brothers. Algeria went on to finish fourth.
2019
Final · Egypt 2019, Cairo
Algeria won six and drew one of their seven matches in Egypt and beat Senegal 1–0 in the final in Cairo for their second title. Ismaël Bennacer was named the tournament’s best player.
2026
Round of 16 · Morocco 2025, Rabat
Algeria and DR Congo were still goalless deep into extra time. In the 119th minute substitute Adil Boulbina, set up by Ramiz Zerrouki, scored to spare both sides a shoot-out and send Algeria into the quarter-finals.

Nigeria beat Algeria 3–0 in the 1980 final on home soil; ten years later Algeria returned the favour as hosts, Cherif Oudjani scoring the only goal of the 1990 final. At Morocco 2025 Nigeria won the quarter-final 2–0 in Marrakech through Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams.

Brahim Hemdani, appointed on 5 September 2026 in succession to Vladimir Petković. He had just led Algeria’s under-21s to gold at the Mediterranean Games.
