Burkina Faso’s home tournament brought their first finals wins and a quarter-final shoot-out won 8–7 against Tunisia. In the third-place play-off they led DR Congo 4–1 in the 86th minute, conceded three times before the end and lost the shoot-out 4–1.

Burkina Faso’s AFCON legacy
Burkina Faso’s first Africa Cup of Nations was played under another name. As Upper Volta they went to Ghana in 1978 and lost all three games. The breakthrough came twenty years later, at home: at the 1998 finals in Ouagadougou the Stallions won a finals match for the first time, 2–1 against Algeria, beat Guinea, edged Tunisia 8–7 on penalties in the quarter-finals and reached the last four before Egypt stopped them.
The team that came closest was Paul Put’s in 2013. Burkina Faso topped a group that included the holders Zambia, beat Togo in extra time through Jonathan Pitroipa and survived a semi-final against Ghana on penalties after Aristide Bancé’s equaliser. Pitroipa was sent off in extra time, had the card rescinded on appeal and played the final in Johannesburg, which Nigeria won 1–0. He was named the tournament’s best player.

The decade that followed made the Stallions regulars in the latter stages. Bancé scored in a second semi-final in 2017, against Egypt, before Alain Traoré’s 89th-minute goal beat Ghana for third place. They were semi-finalists again at Cameroon 2021 and reached the last 16 in 2023. At Morocco 2025 they came from behind against Equatorial Guinea with two goals in stoppage time, before Côte d’Ivoire ended the run in the round of 16.
Amir Abdou, appointed in March 2026 after spells in charge of Comoros and Mauritania, now leads the road to East Africa. Group F pairs Burkina Faso with Benin, Mauritania and the Central African Republic, and the top two qualify. Qualifying begins on 24 September 2026; the Stallions open at home to Benin on the 25th with a 25-man squad that leaves out captain Bertrand Traoré.

Ghana led from a 13th-minute penalty until Aristide Bancé equalised on the hour. Jonathan Pitroipa was sent off in extra time, Burkina Faso won the shoot-out 3–2, and the red card was later rescinded, so Pitroipa played in the final against Nigeria.
2017
Third-place play-off · Port-Gentil
Three days after losing their semi-final to Egypt on penalties — Bancé had cancelled out Mohamed Salah’s goal — Burkina Faso met Ghana for third place. Alain Traoré settled it in the 89th minute.
2025

Equatorial Guinea went ahead through Marvin Anieboh five minutes from the end. Georgi Minoungou equalised in the fifth minute of stoppage time and Edmond Tapsoba won it three minutes later, the start of a run to the last 16.

Burkina Faso have knocked Tunisia out of the AFCON three times, all in the quarter-finals: on penalties in 1998, 2–0 in 2017 and 1–0 at Cameroon 2021.
Their first win at a finals came at the eighth attempt — 2–1 against Algeria in Ouagadougou in 1998, the year they hosted.
Burkina Faso have met Ghana in two knockout ties at the finals and won both: the 2013 semi-final on penalties and the 2017 third-place play-off 1–0.
Paul Put, the Belgian who took Burkina Faso to the 2013 final, now coaches AFCON 2027 co-hosts Uganda.
At Cameroon 2021 the Stallions reached the semi-finals via a 7–6 shoot-out against Gabon and a 1–0 quarter-final win over Tunisia, scored by Dango Ouattara.
