Cameroon’s AFCON legacy
Few nations have won the Africa Cup of Nations in three different generations. Cameroon have. The first star came at Côte d’Ivoire 1984, when a side built around midfielder Théophile Abega — the tournament’s best player and Cameroon’s top scorer — beat Nigeria 3–1 in the final. Two years later the Lions lost the 1986 final to hosts Egypt on penalties; two years after that, Roger Milla’s team beat Nigeria again, 1–0, to make it two titles in four years.
The second golden age arrived with the new century. Pierre Lechantre’s squad took the 2000 title against co-hosts Nigeria in a shoot-out after a 2–2 final, with a young Samuel Eto’o the team’s joint top scorer on four goals. Winfried Schäfer’s Lions then defended it in Mali in 2002 without conceding a single goal in six matches, beating Senegal on penalties in the final. Eto’o would keep scoring across six tournaments until no one in the competition’s history had scored more.
The second golden age arrived with the new century. The third came in Gabon in 2017. Hugo Broos’s side went a goal down to Egypt in the final, levelled through Nicolas Nkoulou and won it two minutes from time through Vincent Aboubakar — Cameroon’s fifth title, and still the second-highest total after Egypt’s seven. Five years later Aboubakar captained the hosts at Cameroon 2021, scored eight goals and led a three-goal comeback against Burkina Faso to secure third place in Yaoundé.
Under David Pagou, appointed three weeks before the tournament, Cameroon reached the quarter-finals at Morocco 2025 before losing to the hosts. The road to East Africa now runs through Group G — Comoros, Namibia and Congo — with two places available and a squad in the middle of a generational change.

Final · Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire 1984
Nigeria scored early in the final in Abidjan. René Ndjeya equalised, then Théophile Abega and Ernest Ebongue struck in the last 11 minutes to make it 3–1 — Cameroon’s first title, fourteen years after their first tournament. Abega was named the tournament’s best player.
2002

Defending the crown in Mali, Schäfer’s Lions played six matches, scored nine and let in none. The final against Senegal finished 0–0 and Cameroon won the shoot-out 3–2. Their six clean sheets set a mark Côte d’Ivoire matched in 2012.

Mohamed Elneny gave Egypt the lead midway through the first half. Nicolas Nkoulou headed Cameroon level just before the hour and Vincent Aboubakar won it two minutes from time. Christian Bassogog was named the tournament’s best player.

AFCON rivalry
No pairing has decided more AFCON titles for Cameroon. They beat Nigeria 3–1 in the 1984 final and 1–0 in 1988, then won the 2000 final against the co-hosts on penalties after a 2–2 draw. Nigeria did beat Cameroon 2–1 for third place in 1992.

Vincent Aboubakar’s eight goals at Cameroon 2021 were one short of the single-tournament record, set by Ndaye Mulamba of Zaire in 1974.
Claude Le Roy, who coached Cameroon to the 1988 title, went on to lead teams at nine AFCON tournaments — more than any other coach.
