Egypt beat the hosts, Sudan, in the opening game of the first Africa Cup of Nations and then Ethiopia 4–0 in the final. Mohamed Diba scored all four goals in the final and was named the tournament’s best player — the first of Egypt’s seven titles.

Egypt’s AFCON legacy
Egypt were there at the very start and have set the standard ever since. At the first Africa Cup of Nations, in Sudan in 1957, Mohamed Diba scored all four goals of the final against Ethiopia; two years later, as hosts, Egypt kept the trophy. No country has matched what followed: seven titles, 27 tournaments, ten finals and, through 2023, more matches, wins and goals at the finals than anyone else.
The defining era came late. Hassan Shehata’s side won at home in 2006, Mohamed Aboutrika converting the decisive penalty against Côte d’Ivoire, retained the title in Ghana in 2008 with Aboutrika scoring the winner against Cameroon, then beat Ghana in Angola in 2010 to become the first nation to win three in a row. Ahmed Hassan, best player of the tournament in 2006 and 2010, and Essam El Hadary finished with four winner’s medals each, still the record.
The defining era came late. Hassan Shehata’s side won at home in 2006, Mohamed Aboutrika converting the decisive penalty against Côte d’Ivoire, retained the title in Ghana in 2008 with Aboutrika scoring the winner against Cameroon, then beat Ghana in Angola in 2010 to become the first nation to win three in a row. Ahmed Hassan, best player of the tournament in 2006 and 2010, and Essam El Hadary finished with four winner’s medals each, still the record.
Since then Egypt have kept arriving at the business end without the trophy. They lost the 2017 final to Cameroon and the 2021 final to Senegal on penalties. At Morocco 2025 they knocked out holders Côte d’Ivoire before losing to Senegal in the semi-finals and to Nigeria in a shoot-out for third. Mohamed Salah’s four goals in Morocco took him to 11 at the finals — level with his coach, Hossam Hassan, and one behind Hassan El-Shazly’s national record.
The road to East Africa starts in Group B against Angola, Malawi and South Sudan, with the top two qualifying. Qualifying begins on 24 September 2026; Egypt open against Angola at Cairo International Stadium the following day, then travel to South Sudan.

Final · Egypt 1986
For the first time an AFCON final ended without a goal. In the shoot-out goalkeeper Thabet Al Batal saved from André Kana-Biyik, and the hosts beat holders Cameroon 5–4 to win a third title, 27 years after their second.
2010
Final · Angola 2010
Egypt beat Ghana 1–0 in the final to become the first nation to win three consecutive titles. They won all six of their matches in Angola, scoring 15 and conceding two, and Hassan Shehata had been in charge for all three triumphs.
2026
Quarter-final · Morocco 2025, Agadir
Omar Marmoush scored inside four minutes, Rami Rabia headed a second and Mohamed Salah added a third early in the second half as Egypt beat defending champions Côte d’Ivoire 3–2. It was Salah’s fourth goal of the tournament and his 11th at the finals, equalling Hossam Hassan’s tally.

AFCON rivalry
Egypt beat holders Cameroon on penalties in the 1986 final on home soil and again in the 2008 final in Accra, where Mohamed Aboutrika scored 13 minutes from the end. Cameroon took the third meeting, coming from a goal down to win the 2017 final 2–1 in Gabon.

Egypt played in each of the first three AFCON finals — winning in 1957 and 1959, then losing to hosts Ethiopia after extra time in 1962.
CAF lists two men who have won AFCON as both player and coach: Egypt’s Mahmoud El-Gohary (1957 and 1998) and Nigeria’s Stephen Keshi.
Egypt 6–3 Nigeria in 1963 is the highest-scoring match in AFCON finals history in CAF’s records.
Ayman Mansour scored 23 seconds into Egypt’s 4–0 win over Gabon in 1994 — the fastest goal CAF lists for the finals.
Egyptians have been named the tournament’s best player six times: Mohamed Diba, Mahmoud El-Gohary, Hassan El-Shazly, Ahmed Hassan (twice) and Hosny Abd Rabo.
