Guinea opened the final round with a 1–1 draw against Nigeria and a 4–2 win over Egypt, which left them needing to beat Morocco in their last match. It finished 1–1, and Morocco took the title with five points to Guinea’s four.

Guinea’s AFCON legacy
Guinea came closer to the title in 1976 than the word ‘runners-up’ suggests. There was no final that year: the last four played a round-robin, and Guinea went through all six of their matches in Ethiopia unbeaten – three wins and three draws, among them a 4–2 win over Egypt – before a 1–1 draw with Morocco in their closing game left them a point behind the champions.
Fourteen tournaments since a 1970 debut have produced five quarter-finals, all of them since 2004. The 2006 side of Pascal Feindouno and Kaba Diawara won all three group games in Egypt before losing a 3–2 quarter-final to Senegal; in 2012 Guinea beat Botswana 6–1, still their biggest win at the finals, and yet did not get out of the group.
Fourteen tournaments since a 1970 debut have produced five quarter-finals, all of them since 2004. Côte d’Ivoire 2023 brought the fifth quarter-final, secured by Mohamed Bayo’s winner eight minutes into stoppage time against Equatorial Guinea; DR Congo won the quarter-final 3–1. Guinea then missed Morocco 2025, finishing third behind DR Congo and Tanzania despite six qualifying goals from Serhou Guirassy.
Paulo Duarte’s squad faces a narrower road than most. Kenya, co-hosts of the 2027 finals, are in Group D and have qualified automatically, so only the best-placed of Guinea, South Africa and Eritrea will join them. The campaign starts against South Africa in Johannesburg on 26 September, and Kenya visit Conakry on 1 October.

Group stage and quarter-final · Egypt 2006
Guinea beat South Africa 2–0, Zambia 2–1 and Tunisia 3–0, with Pascal Feindouno scoring three times in the last two games. In the Alexandria quarter-final Kaba Diawara put them ahead against Senegal, but Senegal scored three and won 3–2.
2015
Group D · Equatorial Guinea 2015
Guinea drew 1–1 with Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon and Mali and could not be separated from Mali. They were placed second after lots were drawn, and met Ghana in the quarter-final, where they lost 3–0.
2024
Round of 16 · Abidjan
Equatorial Guinea had topped their group ahead of Nigeria and the hosts, Côte d’Ivoire. Playing against ten men, Guinea found the winner through Mohamed Bayo in the eighth minute of stoppage time to reach their fifth quarter-final.
