Kenya’s AFCON legacy
For Kenya, AFCON 2027 closes a long circle. The country was lined up to stage the 1996 finals but withdrew as hosts, and South Africa took the tournament instead. In September 2023 CAF handed the 2027 edition jointly to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania — the first Africa Cup of Nations staged by three countries, and the first in East Africa since Ethiopia hosted in 1976.
On the pitch, the Harambee Stars’ finals story is one of near things. Six appearances since a 1972 debut in Cameroon, where they drew with Mali and Togo, have all ended in the group stage. Three straight tournaments between 1988 and 1992 brought two points in total; the first win finally came in Tunisia in 2004, 3–0 against Burkina Faso with goals from Emmanuel Ake, Dennis Oliech and John Baraza.

Egypt 2019, Kenya’s first finals in 15 years, came closest to a breakthrough. Michael Olunga scored twice as Kenya came from behind twice to beat Tanzania 3–2, and they missed the last 16 only on goal difference among the third-placed teams. The home crowds have had a preview since: at CHAN 2024, co-hosted in August 2025, Kenya went unbeaten through the group, beat Morocco 1–0 and lost their quarter-final to Madagascar only on penalties.
Benni McCarthy, appointed in March 2025 on a contract that runs through AFCON 2027, leads a team whose place is already secured. Kenya still play in qualifying Group D against South Africa, Guinea and Eritrea, but the results do not affect their spot: only the best-placed of the other three joins them at the finals. The campaign starts at home to Eritrea on 26 September 2026.

After defeats by Mali and Senegal, Kenya signed off in Tunisia with a 3–0 win over Burkina Faso. Emmanuel Ake, Dennis Oliech and John Baraza scored in the second half for the country’s first victory at a finals.
2018
Qualifier · Nairobi
The road to Egypt 2019 turned in Nairobi in September 2018. An own goal by Ghana’s Nicholas Opoku put Kenya ahead before half-time, and they held on after Joash Onyango’s red card. Kenya went on to qualify for their first finals in 15 years.

Tanzania led twice, through Simon Msuva and Mbwana Samatta. Michael Olunga equalised the first, Johanna Omolo the second, and Olunga won it ten minutes from time — Kenya’s most recent win at a finals.
