Njiva Rakotoharimalala scored the only goal against Equatorial Guinea on 16 October 2018, making Madagascar the first team to qualify for the 2019 finals. The game was played outside Antananarivo because CAF had suspended Mahamasina Stadium after a fatal crush there in September.

Madagascar’s AFCON legacy
Few first tournaments have gone like Madagascar’s. The Barea had won once in 16 games across four qualifying campaigns before Nicolas Dupuis’s side turned things round, and in October 2018 Njiva Rakotoharimalala’s goal against Equatorial Guinea made them the first team to qualify for the 2019 finals — the 40th nation ever to reach an AFCON.
In Egypt they drew 2–2 with Guinea, Anicet Abel heading the island’s first goal at the finals, beat Burundi through Marco Ilaimaharitra and then beat Nigeria 2–0 in Alexandria to win Group B. Ranked 108th in the world, 63 places below the Super Eagles, they kept going: 2–2 with DR Congo in the round of 16 and all four of their penalties scored in the shoot-out, before Tunisia ended the run 3–0 in the quarter-finals.

They have not been back since, although Madagascar’s home-based players reached the final of CHAN 2024 in Nairobi. Corentin Martins, in charge since January 2025, still has two of the 2019 quarter-finalists in his squad: Ilaimaharitra and Thomas Fontaine.
The draw has put Nigeria back in their path. Madagascar open Group L in Uyo on 25 September 2026, then meet co-hosts Tanzania in Meknès, Morocco, four days later. Tanzania are already qualified, so only the best-placed of Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau will join them.

Lalaina Nomenjanahary pounced on a defensive mistake to score early, and Carolus Andriamahitsinoro’s free-kick deflected in off Wilfred Ndidi after half-time. Madagascar beat three-time champions Nigeria 2–0 and finished top of Group B on their debut.

Madagascar went ahead after nine minutes and, after Cédric Bakambu’s equaliser, led again through Faneva Andriatsima’s header — until Chancel Mbemba levelled late on. After a goalless extra time, the Barea scored all four of their penalties to win the shoot-out 4–2.

Madagascar were the first team to qualify for AFCON 2019, and the 40th nation to reach an Africa Cup of Nations finals.
Before that campaign, Madagascar had won just one of 16 games across their previous four AFCON qualifying campaigns.
Madagascar went unbeaten in their first four matches at the finals — no debutant had done so since Libya in 1982.
Madagascar’s home-based players reached the final of CHAN 2024 in Nairobi, losing to Morocco — having finished third at the previous edition, CHAN 2022.
Madagascar’s ‘home’ qualifier against Tanzania on 29 September 2026 is being played in Meknès, Morocco.
They reached the quarter-finals in 2019. They topped Group B after beating Nigeria 2–0, knocked out DR Congo on penalties and then lost 3–0 to Tunisia.
Once, at Egypt 2019. They have not qualified since.
Not yet. Qualifying begins on 24 September 2026. Madagascar are in Group L with Nigeria, Tanzania and Guinea-Bissau; because co-hosts Tanzania are already qualified, only the best-placed of the other three teams goes through.
On 25 September 2026 in Uyo, in the first round of AFCON 2027 qualifying. Madagascar beat Nigeria 2–0 when the teams met at AFCON 2019.
