Niger began their 2012 qualifying campaign with a 2–0 defeat in South Africa. Five weeks later, in their second game, they beat Egypt — the reigning African champions — 1–0 at home, the result that turned a group nobody expected them to win into a genuine race.

Niger’s AFCON legacy
For most of their history Niger followed the Africa Cup of Nations from the outside. Then came October 2010 in Niamey: a 1–0 win over Egypt, the reigning African champions, in the second match of qualifying for the 2012 tournament. The Mena did not take a point away from home in that group, but three home wins were enough. When the last round was played, Niger, South Africa and Sierra Leone were level on nine points and Niger’s head-to-head record sent them to their first finals — while South Africa’s players, convinced a 0–0 draw had done the job, were taking a lap of honour in Nelspruit.
The debut in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea was a hard education. Co-hosts Gabon won the opener 2–0 in Libreville; William N’Gounou equalised against Tunisia after nine minutes for Niger’s first goal at the finals, only for a late Tunisian winner; Morocco took the last group game 1–0. A year later the Mena were back, having overturned a first-leg defeat by Guinea, and in Port Elizabeth Gernot Rohr’s side earned the country’s first AFCON point with a 0–0 draw against DR Congo.
The debut in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea was a hard education. Co-hosts Gabon won the opener 2–0 in Libreville; William N’Gounou equalised against Tunisia after nine minutes for Niger’s first goal at the finals, only for a late Tunisian winner; Morocco took the last group game 1–0. A year later the Mena were back, having overturned a first-leg defeat by Guinea, and in Port Elizabeth Gernot Rohr’s side earned the country’s first AFCON point with a 0–0 draw against DR Congo.
Niger have not returned since 2013, but the last campaign came close. In qualifying for Morocco 2025 they beat Sudan 4–0 and won 2–1 away to Ghana in Accra, yet finished third, one point behind second-placed Sudan. Their home games in that campaign were played in Morocco and Togo, and the pattern continues: this time Niger will host their qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium, because no ground in the country currently meets CAF and FIFA requirements.
The man asked to end the wait is Nabil Neghiz, a former Algeria assistant coach presented in Niamey on 11 September 2026, two weeks before the opener. Group A pairs Niger with Morocco, Gabon and Lesotho, and the top two go to East Africa. The Mena start against Lesotho in Accra on 25 September, then travel to Gabon four days later.

Final qualifying round · Cairo and Nelspruit
Niger lost 3–0 in Cairo on the final day and still qualified. South Africa and Sierra Leone drew 0–0 in Nelspruit, leaving three teams on nine points with Niger top on head-to-head. CAF confirmed Niger’s place after South Africa’s players had celebrated on the pitch in the belief they were through.
2012

Four days after losing their opener to co-hosts Gabon, Niger fell behind early against Tunisia. William N’Gounou equalised in the ninth minute, and Niger held on until Tunisia’s winner in the closing minutes. It remains Niger’s only goal at an AFCON finals.
2013
Group stage · Port Elizabeth
Back at the finals a year later, Gernot Rohr’s Niger held DR Congo 0–0 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium — the country’s first point at an AFCON. Defeats by Mali and Ghana ended the tournament in the group stage.
