Senegal’s AFCON legacy
For most of their history Senegal were the nearly team of African football. They finished fourth on their debut in 1965 and again in 1990, hosted the tournament in 1992, lost the 2002 final to Cameroon on penalties and the 2019 final to Algeria 1–0 in Cairo. It took sixteen finals tournaments to win one.
When the title came, at Cameroon 2021, it arrived through men who had lived the near-misses. The coach was Aliou Cissé, whose kick had been saved in the 2002 shoot-out. Sadio Mané missed a penalty seven minutes into the final against Egypt in Yaoundé, then scored the decisive kick of the shoot-out and was named the tournament’s best player.

At Morocco 2025 they were back on the final weekend. Pape Thiaw’s side beat Sudan, Mali and Egypt in the knockout rounds and won the final against the hosts 1–0 after extra time on the pitch through Pape Gueye. On 17 March 2026 CAF’s Appeal Board declared that Senegal had forfeited the final and recorded it as a 3–0 win for Morocco. Senegal have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which has set a hearing for 8 October 2026 and has not said when it will decide.
After a round-of-32 exit at the 2026 World Cup, the federation turned in August to Patrick Vieira, a World Cup winner with France who was born in Senegal. His Group J campaign opens away to Mozambique in Maputo on 25 September 2026 — the tie was reversed at the Senegalese federation’s request, so Senegal host the return later in qualifying — and continues in Bahir Dar against Ethiopia four days later. Sudan complete the group, and the top two qualify.

In their first AFCON final Senegal held holders Cameroon to 0–0 after extra time. Three of their five penalties failed in the shoot-out — the last of them from Aliou Cissé — and Cameroon won it 3–2.

Sadio Mané missed a penalty in the seventh minute against Egypt and the final stayed goalless through extra time. In the shoot-out he scored the decisive kick for a 4–2 win and the country’s first title. Aliou Cissé was the coach.

Pape Gueye’s goal four minutes into extra time gave Senegal a 1–0 win over the hosts on the pitch. On 17 March 2026 CAF’s Appeal Board declared that Senegal had forfeited the match and recorded it as a 3–0 win for Morocco. Senegal have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which will hear the case on 8 October 2026 and has not said when it will decide.

AFCON rivalry
Senegal won the 2021 final against the record champions 4–2 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes in Yaoundé, and beat them again, 1–0, in the 2025 semi-final in Tangier. Across six meetings at the finals Senegal have won three, drawn one and lost two — including the 2006 semi-final in Cairo, which Egypt won 2–1 on the way to the title.

Senegal hosted AFCON in 1992 — the first edition with 12 teams and quarter-finals.
At Côte d’Ivoire 2023 Senegal won all three group matches, then went out on penalties to the hosts in the round of 16.
