Two years after a goalless debut tournament, Sierra Leone led Burkina Faso through John Gbassay Sessay after 11 minutes. Burkina Faso levelled in the 74th minute; Mohamed Kallon, sent on early in the second half, scored the winner in the 89th. It is still the country’s only win at a finals.

Sierra Leone’s AFCON legacy
Sierra Leone’s first road to the finals was run without a defeat. In qualifying for Tunisia 1994 the Leone Stars won four and drew two, beating both Algeria and Senegal in Freetown to top their group. The tournament itself was brief — a 4–0 defeat by Côte d’Ivoire in Sousse and a goalless draw with Zambia — but it opened a door that stayed open for one more edition.
At South Africa 1996 came the night the country still points to. In Bloemfontein, John Gbassay Sessay scored Sierra Leone’s first goal at a finals after 11 minutes against Burkina Faso; after the equaliser, Mohamed Kallon, on as a second-half substitute, won it a minute from time. Defeats by Algeria and Zambia followed, and that 2–1 remains Sierra Leone’s only victory at an AFCON.

The return took a generation. Sierra Leone were disqualified from qualifying for Egypt 2019, then needed to beat Benin in their final qualifier for Cameroon 2021 — and did, 1–0, through veteran striker Kei Kamara. In Douala, goalkeeper Mohamed Nbalie Kamara was man of the match as holders Algeria were held 0–0, and Alhadji Kamara’s stoppage-time equaliser earned a 2–2 draw with Côte d’Ivoire. A 1–0 defeat by Equatorial Guinea, with a late penalty saved, ended the run.
Sierra Leone missed Côte d’Ivoire 2023 and Morocco 2025, although they did beat the reigning champions Côte d’Ivoire 1–0 in qualifying in October 2024. The 2027 campaign starts under Didier Gomes Da Rosa, the French coach who took Botswana to AFCON 2025, in Group E with DR Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Zimbabwe. The top two qualify; the first test is Zimbabwe on 24 September 2026.

Sierra Leone went into their last qualifier for Cameroon 2021 needing to beat Benin. They won 1–0, Kei Kamara scoring the only goal, and finished second in the group behind Nigeria — a first finals since 1996.

Algeria arrived in Douala as defending champions, unbeaten since 2018, and could not find a way past goalkeeper Mohamed Nbalie Kamara. The 0–0 was celebrated like a victory, with the Sierra Leone bench sprinting onto the pitch at the final whistle.

Mohamed Nbalie Kamara saved Franck Kessié’s early penalty, Musa Noah Kamara answered Sébastien Haller’s opener with a left-footed strike, and after Nicolas Pépé restored Côte d’Ivoire’s lead, Alhadji Kamara pounced on a goalkeeping error in stoppage time for 2–2.

Sierra Leone reached their first AFCON unbeaten, winning their qualifying group for Tunisia 1994 with four wins and two draws. Runners-up Algeria were later disqualified for fielding an ineligible player, and Senegal went to the finals instead.
Zambia’s Kalusha Bwalya scored a hat-trick against Sierra Leone at South Africa 1996 and was named the tournament’s best player.
At Cameroon 2021 Sierra Leone took points off both former champions in their group: Algeria (0–0) and Côte d’Ivoire (2–2).
In October 2024 Sierra Leone beat the reigning African champions, Côte d’Ivoire, 1–0 in qualifying for Morocco 2025.
CAF disqualified Sierra Leone from qualifying for Egypt 2019 and annulled their results.
