Somalia beat Kenya 1–0 at home in November 1984. Kenya won the return 1–0 a fortnight later and went through 4–3 on penalties. It would be Somalia’s last win in any qualifier for almost 35 years.

Somalia’s AFCON legacy
Somalia have never played at an Africa Cup of Nations, and for decades their home qualifiers have been staged abroad. When the Ocean Stars beat Zimbabwe 1–0 in September 2019 — an 86th-minute winner, set up by their captain — the “home” leg was played in Djibouti. It was Somalia’s first win in World Cup qualifying and their first qualifying victory of any kind for 35 years.
That 35-year gap reached back to November 1984, when Somalia beat Kenya 1–0 at home in AFCON qualifying, lost the return by the same score and went out 4–3 on penalties. Recent campaigns ended early: Eswatini knocked Somalia out of AFCON qualifying in both 2022 and 2024.

March 2026 was different. Drawn against Mauritius in the preliminary round, Somalia played their home leg in Matola, Mozambique, and the return in Saint Pierre, and neither match produced a goal. Yusuf Ali Nur’s side scored all four of their penalties in the shoot-out, Mauritius missed two, and Somalia won it 4–2 — the first time the Ocean Stars had reached the group stage of AFCON qualifying.
Group C is a step up: Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and The Gambia, with finals places for the top two. Qualifying begins on 24 September 2026. Somalia open away to The Gambia on 25 September and then take on Côte d’Ivoire on 29 September — and their first opponents know this road, having started their own journey to a first AFCON in the preliminary round.

Ranked 202nd of 211 teams, Somalia beat Zimbabwe 1–0 in the first leg of their preliminary tie with an 86th-minute winner, in a “home” match staged in Djibouti. Zimbabwe won the return 3–1, but the result travelled: the team trended worldwide on social media.

After a goalless first leg in Matola, Somalia held Mauritius to 0–0 again at the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex and won the shoot-out 4–2. It took the Ocean Stars into the group stage of AFCON qualifying for the first time.
Somalia’s first AFCON qualifier, in March 1973, ended in a 2–0 home win over Uganda.
By RSSSF’s records, the last AFCON qualifier Somalia played on home soil was a 0–0 draw with Uganda in October 1986.
Before beating Zimbabwe in September 2019, Somalia had gone 27 matches without a win, since a 1–0 victory over Tanzania in January 2009.
