Zimbabwe’s debut tournament began with defeats by Egypt and Cameroon, the second a 5–3 thriller in which Peter Ndlovu scored twice. In the last group game Joel Luphahla struck in the 65th and 71st minutes to beat Algeria 2–1 — the country’s first win at a finals.

Zimbabwe’s AFCON legacy
Zimbabwe’s AFCON story begins with a tournament that went elsewhere: the 2000 finals were taken away from them and handed to Ghana and Nigeria, the competition’s first co-hosts. Four years later the Warriors made their own debut in Tunisia. Peter Ndlovu scored the country’s first finals goal against Egypt in Sfax and two more in a 5–3 defeat by Cameroon, and Joel Luphahla’s double beat Algeria 2–1 in Sousse for a first win.
That pattern — memorable nights, early flights home — has held across six tournaments. Zimbabwe beat Ghana 2–1 at Egypt 2006, drew 2–2 with Algeria at Gabon 2017 and beat Guinea 2–1 in Yaoundé at Cameroon 2021, yet have never reached the knockout rounds: three wins in 18 finals matches.
That pattern — memorable nights, early flights home — has held across six tournaments. Zimbabwe beat Ghana 2–1 at Egypt 2006, drew 2–2 with Algeria at Gabon 2017 and beat Guinea 2–1 in Yaoundé at Cameroon 2021, yet have never reached the knockout rounds: three wins in 18 finals matches.
Qualifying has produced some of their best football. Zimbabwe topped their groups on the way to Gabon 2017 and Egypt 2019, the second time winning 2–1 in Kinshasa and finishing ahead of DR Congo. They were disqualified from qualifying for Côte d’Ivoire 2023, then came back for Morocco 2025 under Mario Marinica, appointed six weeks before the tournament: Prince Dube put them ahead of Egypt until the 64th minute before Mohamed Salah won it in stoppage time.
The 2027 campaign, under Spaniard Ramón Catalá, unveiled in August 2026, runs through Group E with DR Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone. The top two qualify; the Warriors start away to Sierra Leone on 24 September 2026 and then host DR Congo in Harare.

Qualifier · Kinshasa
On the road to Egypt 2019, Zimbabwe won 2–1 in Kinshasa in October 2018, drew the return 1–1 in Harare and topped a qualifying group in which DR Congo finished second. The two meet again in Group E for 2027.
2022
Group stage · Cameroon 2021, Yaoundé
Sadio Mané’s penalty seven minutes into stoppage time beat Zimbabwe in their opener in Bafoussam, and Malawi came from behind to win 2–1. The Warriors answered by beating Guinea 2–1 in Yaoundé, with Knowledge Musona and Mahachi scoring before half-time.
2025
Group stage · Morocco 2025, Agadir
Prince Dube gave Zimbabwe a 20th-minute lead against Egypt. It lasted until Omar Marmoush equalised in the 64th minute, and Mohamed Salah scored the winner a minute into stoppage time.
