Gabon’s AFCON legacy
Gabon have hosted the Africa Cup of Nations twice in five years – with Equatorial Guinea in 2012 and on their own in 2017 – and the two tournaments tell opposite stories. In 2012 the Panthers won all three group games, the second of them 3–2 against Morocco with a Bruno Mbanangoyé goal eight minutes into stoppage time, then drew 1–1 with Mali in Libreville and lost the shoot-out 5–4. In 2017 they drew all three and went out after a goalless final group game against Cameroon, the eventual champions.
That Libreville shoot-out was part of a pattern. Gabon’s three AFCON knockout matches – against Tunisia in 1996, Mali in 2012 and Burkina Faso in 2021 – all finished level, and all three were lost on penalties. The quarter-finals of 1996 and 2012 remain their best finish from nine appearances since a 1994 debut.
That Libreville shoot-out was part of a pattern. Gabon’s three AFCON knockout matches – against Tunisia in 1996, Mali in 2012 and Burkina Faso in 2021 – all finished level, and all three were lost on penalties. The quarter-finals of 1996 and 2012 remain their best finish from nine appearances since a 1994 debut.
For fifteen years the face of the team was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who scored in all three group games in 2012 and whose goal against Mozambique at Morocco 2025 was his seventh at the finals, a Gabon record. That tournament ended with three defeats, and Aubameyang then announced his retirement from international football.
Sébastien Migné, in charge since July 2026, begins the rebuild in Group A with Morocco, Niger and Lesotho, and a first squad drawn entirely from clubs abroad. The opening test is Morocco in Rabat on 25 September, then Niger four days later; the top two qualify.

Gabon beat Niger 2–0, Morocco 3–2 and Tunisia 1–0, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scoring in every game. In the Libreville quarter-final Eric Mouloungui put them ahead against Mali, Cheick Diabaté equalised late, and Mali won the shoot-out 5–4.

Aubameyang scored in 1–1 draws with Guinea-Bissau and Burkina Faso, which left Gabon needing to beat Cameroon in their last group game. It finished 0–0, and Cameroon went on to lift the trophy.

Behind to a Bertrand Traoré goal, Gabon drew level in the first minute of stoppage time through an Adama Guira own goal. Burkina Faso won the shoot-out 7–6.

Gabon won the first, 1–0 in Lubango in 2010 through Daniel Cousin. Seven years later, as hosts, they needed to beat Cameroon in Libreville to reach the quarter-finals; it finished 0–0 and Cameroon went on to win the tournament. At Morocco 2025 Cameroon took the third meeting 1–0 in Agadir.

At their 1994 debut, Gabon conceded the fastest goal in AFCON history: Ayman Mansour scored for Egypt after 23 seconds.
Gabon have hosted AFCON twice – in 2012, jointly with Equatorial Guinea, and alone in 2017, after CAF took the tournament away from Libya.
Before Cameroon beat them at Morocco 2025, Gabon had gone seven AFCON matches unbeaten – one win and six draws.
Aubameyang’s AFCON career ran for fifteen years, from 2010 to 2025, across tournaments in Southern, Central and North Africa.
