Weeks after a 4–0 group defeat by Equatorial Guinea, the hosts met Nigeria in the final and fell behind to a William Troost-Ekong goal. Franck Kessié equalised and Sébastien Haller, who had recovered from cancer to play in the tournament, won it nine minutes from time.

Côte d’Ivoire’s AFCON legacy
Côte d’Ivoire have never won the Africa Cup of Nations the easy way. Their first title, at Senegal 1992, came without conceding a goal all tournament and was settled by an 11–10 shoot-out against Ghana in Dakar. The second, in 2015, followed two lost finals on penalties — against Egypt in 2006 and Zambia in 2012, a tournament in which they did not concede once — and needed another marathon against Ghana: 9–8, with goalkeeper Boubacar Barry scoring the last of 22 kicks.
The third was the most improbable of all. As hosts of the 2023 edition they lost 4–0 to Equatorial Guinea in the group stage, changed coach mid-tournament and went through as one of the best third-placed teams. Under Emerse Faé they then beat holders Senegal on penalties, Mali after extra time and DR Congo, and came from behind to beat Nigeria 2–1 in the final in Abidjan, Sébastien Haller scoring the winner nine minutes from time.

Long before the golden generation there was Laurent Pokou, top scorer at the 1968 and 1970 tournaments, whose five goals against Ethiopia in 1970 are still the record for a single AFCON match. Didier Drogba captained the side in the 2006 and 2012 finals, and Yaya and Kolo Touré played in all three finals between 2006 and 2015.
Morocco 2025 ended in the quarter-finals with a 3–2 defeat by Egypt. After the World Cup the federation let Faé’s contract expire and, in August 2026, brought back Hervé Renard, coach of the 2015 champions. His first competitive match is the one Ivorians circle every time: Ghana, in Bouaké, on 24 September 2026, opening a Group C that also includes The Gambia and Somalia. The top two qualify.

1992
Final · Senegal 1992, Dakar
Côte d’Ivoire went through the whole tournament without letting in a goal, and the final against Ghana finished 0–0 after extra time. The shoot-out ran to 11–10 before the Elephants became African champions for the first time.
2006
Quarter-final · Egypt 2006, Cairo
Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire scored once each in extra time, then went through their entire teams — both goalkeepers scored — in a shoot-out. Samuel Eto’o missed Cameroon’s 12th kick and Didier Drogba, who had taken the first, scored to win it 12–11. The Elephants went on to their first final since 1992.

After a goalless final against Ghana, Hervé Renard’s side failed with their first two penalties and trailed 2–0. They recovered, and after 21 kicks goalkeeper Boubacar Barry stepped up and scored the 22nd for a 9–8 win and a second title.

AFCON rivalry
Ghana have the better of the ten meetings at the finals — five wins to three, including the 1968 and 1970 semi-finals after extra time — but the two that decided titles went to Côte d’Ivoire. Both finals, in 1992 and 2015, finished 0–0, and the Elephants won the shoot-outs 11–10 and 9–8. The neighbours open their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaigns against each other in Bouaké on 24 September 2026.

Two of Côte d’Ivoire’s three titles were won in shoot-outs against Ghana: 11–10 in 1992 and 9–8 in 2015.
Côte d’Ivoire have gone through a whole AFCON without conceding twice — as champions in 1992 and as runners-up, beaten on penalties, in 2012.
Hervé Renard beat Côte d’Ivoire in the 2012 final as Zambia’s coach, won the title with them in 2015 — still the only coach to win AFCON with two countries — and returned to the job in August 2026.
Emerse Faé played in the 2006 final and, 18 years later, coached the 2023 champions.
Egypt have knocked Côte d’Ivoire out of AFCON on penalties three times, and beat them 3–2 in the 2025 quarter-finals.
